Q.8 Unit
5, Section B teaches you

gist of the text in your own words. (15)
Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne
tropical disease caused by the dengue virus. Symptoms typically being three
to fourteen days after infection. This may include a high fever, headache,
vomiting, muscle and joint pains, and a characteristic skin rash. Recovery
generally takes two to seven days. In a small proportion of cases, the
disease develops into severe dengue, also known as dengue hemorrhagic fever,
resulting in bleeding, low levels of blood platelets and blood plasma
leakage, or into dengue shock syndrome, where dangerously low blood pressure
occurs. Typically, people infected with dengue virus are asymptomatic (80%)
or have only mild symptoms such as an uncomplicated fever. Others have more
severe illness (5%), and in a small proportion, it is life threatening. The
incubation period (time between exposure and onset of symptoms) ranges from 3
to 14 days, but most often it is 4 to 7 days. Therefore, travelers returning
from endemic areas are unlikely to have dengue if fever or other symptoms
start more than 14 days after arriving home. Children often experience
symptoms similar to those of the common cold and gastroenteritis (vomiting
and diarrhea) and have a greater risk of severe complications, though initial
symptoms are generally mild but include high fever. |

Here’s something to think about the

available when you go to the supermarket? In my experience, it seems like
hundreds! But how about the number of hand baskets? Invariably I struggle to
find even one, especially when I only need a few items. Why might this be the
case? Well, it seems to be a tactic used to encourage us to buy more. If you
are walking around with an empty trolley, you are more tempted to fill it, so
if you a planning on only doing a quick shop, always try to find a basket. It
will be lighter, easier to use and is sure to save you money! |

Rhinos
mind their own business. They like nothing better than to stand around and
eat grass from the ground, or, depending on what kind of rhino, nip leaves
off bushes. They love to roll in the mud, too. Mud keeps rhinos cool, and
they use it for sunscreen. Then he rubbed his chin on the rock. And his
stomach. And his hips. “rock-rubber,” I called him. Rhinos have marvelous
ears. Have you ever looked at a rhino ear? It is somehow like a curled leaf,
or flower petals, or a gracefully rolled paper cone for holding nuts. Rhinos
seem mythical or magical to some people. Maybe that is because they A HORN.
Actually, they have two horns, but one is more prominent. Maybe rhinos are
behind the idea of the unicorn. When people see something near-magical in an
animal, they want that thing. In the case of rhinos, it’s the horn. So people
kill the rhinos and cut off their horns, even though the horns are make of
the same kind of protein that’s in your hair or fingernails. But people who
want magic horns don’t like to hear that. They don’t seem to care that there
are only about 30,000 rhinos left in the world today. I wish they would mind
their own business. Rhinos mind their own business. The eat grass. They lick
rocks. They rub rocks. A living rhino makes a fine acquaintance. |

Q.7 Read the following text and

The history
of progress of the human race is the history of education. Hence it is
necessary for every person, man or woman, to be educated. Women should be
educated like men, otherwise there can be no real progress and half of the
population will remain illiterate. Napoleon was once asked what the greatest
need of France was. He answered “Motherland’s National progress is impossible
without trained and educated mothers”. If the women in any country are not
educated, about half the people in that country will be ignorant. The result
is that such a country will not be able to go along with other nations in
development and progress. Education teaches a woman what she should be. There
is a saying in English, “the hand that rocks the cradle, rules the world”.
The meaning in this is that the mother exercises a very great influence over
the lines of her children and is able to mould their thoughts and characters.
If she is educated, she will make such an impression on the mind of her
child, that will enable him in later life to grow into a good and great man. |
